Four Tips to Increase Your Energy
Four Tips to Increase Your Energy
For years I have operated under the assumption that if I could only learn to manage my time more effectively, I would have more energy. In fact, I have probably tried every time-management tool on the market. However, since my demands always seem to exceed my capacity, I would still find myself cramming as much as possible into my day and then falling into bed at night in a state of complete emotional and physical exhaustion. I was so relieved to learn that time is not my greatest resource, because I can never create more time, but I can create more energy. By practicing the following rituals, I am able to bring more energy to my time.
- Sleep 7-8 hours Per Night
Research shows that adults need an average of eight hours of sleep each night; however, the average American only gets six. While that might not seem like a huge problem, adults who only get six hours of sleep over a two-week period operate at the same level of performance as someone who has been sleep deprived for 48 hours.
- Make Time for Fun
When we have a packed schedule, it seems counterintuitive to take a break. What I have found is that if I make time to do the things I enjoy, I am more productive in my work. When we don’t take time to engage in enjoyable activities on a regular basis, we become negative and feel overwhelmed. Whether it is gardening, reading, playing an instrument, or simply walking in nature--if an activity is enjoyable, fulfilling, and affirming, it will recharge you emotionally and enhance your productivity.
- Practice Uni-Tasking
If our to-do list feels overwhelming, it’s easy to resort to multi-tasking. While that may feel like the most logical solution to a demanding schedule, it actually depletes our energy, productivity, and our IQ! When we multi-task, we are 40% less efficient, and our IQ drops 10 points. By focusing on one task at a time, we get more done in less time, with fewer mistakes.
- Spend Time in Self-Reflection
When you take time to reflect and evaluate your activities, you live and work in alignment with your values. Living aligned with your passion and purpose allows you to access a deep reservoir of spiritual energy. We feel spiritually alive when we are making a living by making a difference.
If you are feeling drained and overwhelmed by your life and work, then it might be time to create some new rituals that increase your energy levels. By putting yourself at the top of your to-do list, you are not only more energized, you are also more productive. After all, if you don’t make yourself a priority, neither will anyone else.
